課程概述

It has been slightly more than a decade since the global financial crisis led to the crash of Irish economy and ended the prosperity known as the Celtic Tiger in 2008. The economic crash has had a huge impact on Irish society, and an event of such magnitude invariably invites responses and inspires reflection from various perspectives, not least literature. In fact, during the recession in the Post-Tiger era, Irish fiction thrives nonetheless. Writers—veterans and novices alike—swarmed to respond to the changes in contemporary Ireland, thus creating what one might justifiably call a Celtic Tiger in Irish fiction during the recession, despite the ironic undertones. These works are roughly referred to with a new category called Post-Tiger novels, many of which feature formal innovation and linguistic experiments. This course aims to formulate a critical narrative for understanding and analyzing Post-Tiger Irish novels, meanwhile prompting students to reflect on the use and value of Post-Tiger novel as a critical concept.
